LA Peer Support Specialist Supervisor Training Application

The Office of Behavioral Health (OBH), in contract partnership with The Extra Mile, is pleased to offer the LA Core Recognized Peer Supervisor Training. We strongly encourage all individuals who supervise or directly work with Peer Support Specialists in behavioral health settings to participate in this impactful training program.

This training equips leaders within a behavioral health agency with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively incorporate and foster the professional growth of their Peer Support staff, ensuring full integration into the agency’s operations and providing the best possible support to clients through their lived experience of recovery. LA Recognized Peer Supervisor Training promotes seamless integration of Peer Support into existing agency structures; including developing clear roles and responsibilities, establishing appropriate supervision practices, and coordinating with other staff members. Overall, this training provides leaders with the necessary tools to build a strong and supportive environment for their Peer Support staff, maximizing their potential to provide impactful recovery support services to clients.

As of February 2025, OBH- in partnership with the Louisiana Medicaid Program and Peer Support stakeholders- expanded the Medicaid Peer Service definition for Peer Supervisors to include experienced Recognized Peer Support Specialists (RPSS) as Recognized Peer Supervisors (RPS). An RPSS must meet the following qualifications to apply for RPS training:

1)Minimum of 21 years of age
2) RPSS in good/active standing for a minimum of three (3) years
3) Minimum of two (2) years of consistent employment as a Peer Support Specialist
with a behavioral health program
4) Letter of Recommendation from fellow RPSS in good/active standing
5) Professional Letter of Reference from current supervisor
6) Supervised by Licensed Mental Health Professional in employing agency

Upon completion of the RPS course, two (2) additional CEU hours are required in supervision each calendar year.

Please note, Licensed Mental Health Professionals (LMHPs) who successfully complete the RPS Training may continue to function as RPS if all criteria are met per the revised Medicaid Peer Support Services definition.

If you have any questions relating to this training or its processes, please feel free to contact Amanda Holmes, OBH Peer Coordinator at [email protected] or George Mills, The Extra Mile at [email protected].
